Special Dog Diets For Canines With Medical Conditions
Dog lovers love their puppies. Even more, they are in love with the idea of puppies: small, soft, dependent, and amusing bundles of love. Buying a puppy’s special diet for such a pleasure seems a small price to pay, even if that diet is a bit more expensive. After all, it's only a temporary measure, just a few months, before the puppy gets to eat regular adult food.
What many people forget is that although puppies often seem perfect, they often grow into imperfect adults. They may develop allergies or diabetes, or they may have special physical needs that have certain nutritional requirements. Through no fault of their own, they might start itching and shedding excessively or going to bathroom too much and in the wrong places. The good news is that there are diets that can help many of these conditions.
What Special Diets CAN do
Special diets have been developed to give our pets a better quality of life during times of stress. The stress in question might be aging, illness physical condition, genetic condition, or activity. These diets have unique formulations that are intended to have a greater digestibility, to change or reduce certain chemical interactions in the body.
They might also improve certain bodily functions by stimulating the production of fluids, enzymes, or hormones, among other things. Some specially formulated diets reduce stress on certain systems. They might also be fed to take certain effects of age or activity into consideration. Literally dozens, if not hundreds, of special diets are available to ease the ailments of our pets.
What Special Diets CAN NOT do
Unfortunately, special diets are not cures. They can not reverse the effects of a physical condition or make an allergy go away. They can not prevent a genetic condition from having an effect on future generations, should the dog be bred.
They only have an immediate effect on the current generation of dog; that is, only the dog that is actually eating the food will get the benefit of the diet. However, certain diets may or may not "cross the placenta" to have either positive or negative physical--not genetic--effects on the puppies that she carries.
Dog owners can help pets with medical conditions in many ways. They can make certain that their dog has an environment that does not aggravate the condition. They can reduce the dog's stress, both physical and mental. In the case of skin conditions, the owner can provide palliated care through bathing. Special diets provide one simple yet effective source of relief for your pet. Feeding your dog a special diet may help him live a longer and happier life.
