Quick and Easy to Prepare Homemade Dog Food Recipes

It is not hard to prepare homemade food for your dog that will keep her both happy and healthy. Dogs enjoy most natural foods that they are given, preferring them over unrecognizable and extruded kibble. Even when providing for dogs with special dietary needs, such as dogs that would ordinarily eat low protein commercial dog food, it is possible to prepare quick and easy foods with superb nourishment for times when your dog is hungry and you're short on time.

The problem with many commercial kibble foods is not that they contain too much protein; rather, it is that they contain too much low-quality protein that contains a high quantity of ammonia-producing agents. For these dogs, foods that contain eggs, real meats with a low fat content such as white chicken meat, and low-fat dairy products such as yogurt and cottage cheese, are all suitable parts of their daily intake. Such foods are high in moisture and the high-quality protein that even dogs with renal disease may need.

One high quality and quick meal that your dog will enjoy includes cottage cheese, egg, and chicken combined with cooked oatmeal and canned pumpkin (plain, no spices). The cottage cheese, egg, and chicken should make up about fifty percent of the meal, the oatmeal should be about thirty percent, and the remainder should be made up of the pumpkin. Baked, steamed fish, or canned fish can be substituted for the chicken. Barley and whole wheat bread can be used as substitute carbohydrates, as well. This recipe only takes a few minutes to prepare--and your dog will go wild over it! This meal appears to have a high quantity of protein; however, the protein is high quality and easy for all dogs to digest.

Although not low fat or low protein, a quick and tasty dog treat can be made by liquefying a pound of beef or pork liver in a blender and combining it with a box of cornbread mix. Pour this mixture into a greased baking pan and cook until the center springs back when touched. Dress it up with a bit of garlic powder either before or after baking for a treat that your dog will love. Refrigerate after cooling or cut into squares and freeze the unused portion.

Vegetable-based biscuits are another easy-to-make food that can be stored for later in the refrigerator or freezer. Combine an egg, a third of a cup of applesauce, a tablespoon of brewer's yeast (to make it rise) and one cup each of cooked brown rice and mashed or grated vegetables. Drop small dollops of this mixture on a greased cookie sheet and bake for 10 to 13 minutes in a 350 degree oven. These biscuits can be served as a treat or as part of your dog's daily meal. As with the liver treats, refrigerate or freeze after cooling.
